How to become a Specialist in Critical Care Medicine in Sri Lanka
  • Currently, to become a Specialist, you have to follow post MD training program conducted by Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) of University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  • You will be eligible to select above program once you are conferred the postgraduate degree of MD Medicine or MD Anesthesiology by University of Colombo.
  • You will be selected competitively for the training program depending on the merit order as the availability of training posts are limited.
  • Post MD training program to be eligible for the board certification as a Specialist in Critical Care Medicine expands for a minimum of 3 years or may extend up to 4 years depending on the overseas training opportunity.
Post MD training program to be eligible for board certification
  • Your local component of the training program extends up to 2 years.
  • All of your training programs are conducted in well reputed major tertiary care hospitals in Sri Lanka such as National Hospital of Sri Lanka- Colombo or National Hospital of Sri Lanka – Kandy.
  • If your base specialty is Medicine, you will be asked to get trained as a Specialist Registrar in Anesthesiology for a period of 1 year which includes full time training programs in general anesthesiology and subspecialties including cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, obstetric and trauma anesthesia.
  • If your base specialty is Anesthesiology, you are required have a training as a full time Specialist Registrar in Medicine for a period of 1 year which includes training attachments in general medicine and subspecialties including cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, nephrology and endocrinology.
  • Following the acquisition of skills and knowledge in Critical Care Medicine, you are required to get trained as full time Specialist Registrar in Critical Care in multiple state of art intensive care units in various specialties.
  • During that period, you will gain experience in management of critically ill patients in medical, surgical, cardiac, cardiothoracic, neurological, neurosurgical, obstetric, trauma and pediatric intensive care units.
  • After the completion of two-year local training, you are required to obtain mandatory training in overseas training center.
Mandatory overseas training component
  • You will then gain your advanced experience in well reputed, PGIM approved overseas training center in United Kingdom or Australia for a minimum of one year up to two years.
  • Most of Specialists in Sri Lanka have had the training in world renowned centers like,
  • All of above training opportunities are endorsed by Royal College of Anesthesiologists and Royal College of Physicians in UK and you will be offered the same training opportunities of national training curriculum.
  • You will be encouraged and facilitated to read for postgraduate examinations such as FFICM, FRCA, MRCP and EDIC.
  • Further, you are required to obtain accreditations in various aspects of your training such as FICE accreditation.
Board Certification as a Specialist in Critical Care Medicine
  • During your training, you will be assessed frequently with work place-based assessments (WBA) and annual reviews of competence progression (ARCP).
  • Further, you are required to complete a research, a clinical audit and multiple case-based discussions along with reflections related to your training.
  • At the end of your training program, you will be assessed by a panel of experts with a portfolio-based viva along with pre-board certification assessment.
  • Following successful completion of above stages, you will be offered the Board Certification as a Specialist in Critical Care Medicine by Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of University of Colombo.
